May’s Warrior: Mel Giannini
At Zen, we love shining a light on the amazing individuals who make our community so special—those who inspire us with their strength, dedication, and heart. Each month, we honor a Warrior of the Month, someone who embodies perseverance and personal growth on and off the mat.
This month, we’re proud to celebrate Mel G, whose journey reflects resilience, courage, and the deep healing that yoga can offer. Mel continues to show up for herself through life’s challenges, embracing her practice with grace and grit.
We’re honored to share her story—read more below and join us in celebrating Mel!
🧘 How long have you been practicing at Zen?
I started yoga shortly after the studio opened in early 2021. It’s hard for me to put into words how much belonging to the studio means to me. I began practicing two years after a head injury, and at first, even a simple forward fold made me extremely dizzy and off balance.
Yoga has taught me to listen to my body, breathe, and slow down. I’ve pushed myself in ways I never thought I could and believed in myself. I continue to surprise myself—especially the moment I accomplished my first tripod headstand.
✨ What benefits have you found from classes and special events?
Attending a few classes each week has deepened both my practice and my health. I feel stronger, healthier, and more flexible than I used to be.
The Sedona retreat was something I will never forget. At the start, I only knew a few people, but by the end, I felt so much gratitude for the memories and connections we created in just a few days.
💫 Favorite Pose?
Lizard Pose – I carry a lot of stress in my hips. This pose allows me to slow my breath, relax deeper, release what I no longer need, and calm my mind.
🌿 Advice for New Yogis?
Show up for you and only you. It doesn’t matter who can lift their leg the highest in Tree Pose or hold a pose the longest—what matters is what happens on your mat.
I often close my eyes during practice to stay focused on my breath and avoid distractions. I love recommending yoga to friends and family—it has helped me heal in so many ways.
🙏 A Note of Gratitude
I’d like to thank Rebekah, Vanessa, Timea, and all the instructors. You continue to make a difference in my life every day. I’m beyond grateful for each of you and to be part of this amazing community. ❤️
