October Warrior: Patty M.

🌟

Meet Patty🌟

Patty was nominated by several of our instructors for the dedication, growth, and positive energy she brings to her practice and our Zen community. We’re so excited to celebrate Patty as our October Zen Warrior and share a little more about the journey that brought her to Zen, how her practice has grown, and what she’s learned along the way.

How did your yoga journey at Zen begin?

Two and a half years ago, I walked into my first yoga class at Zen. After years of a sedentary lifestyle, stressful perimenopause, and living with psoriatic arthritis, psoriasis plaques, daily stiffness, and significant discomfort, my husband, Jason, gave me a Zen membership. It was his thoughtful way of encouraging us both to try something new and focus on optimizing our health.

How has your practice grown since that first class?

That first class became the beginning of a life-changing practice. I started attending once a week and gradually built up to two, three, and sometimes four classes each week. Through regular hot yoga, rest, hydration, and a healthy diet focused on low-carbohydrate foods and lean proteins, I have reached my healthiest self.

What changes have you experienced through your yoga practice?

The benefits have been remarkable. I have reduced my BMI, my mobility has improved exponentially, and my psoriatic plaques have healed. Yoga has helped me become stronger, more flexible, more mindful, and more connected to my body. Most importantly, I have learned that progress does not happen overnight—it happens by continuing to show up.

Is there an accomplishment in your practice that feels especially meaningful?

One of my favorite accomplishments is that I can now do a headstand—something I have not done since fourth grade! It represents so much more than a pose. It reminds me that we are capable of growth and transformation at every stage of life.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the Zen community?

What I enjoy most about Zen is the welcoming, positive, and supportive community. The instructors bring such knowledge, encouragement, warmth, and energy to every class. I always leave feeling stronger, calmer, and grateful that I made the time for myself.

What advice would you give to someone who is just beginning their yoga journey?

My advice to anyone just starting out is simple: come as you are, begin where you are, and do not compare your journey to anyone else’s. Give yourself permission to learn, rest, modify, and grow. The most important step is simply walking through the door and continuing to return.

What does being chosen as Zen’s Warrior of the Month mean to you?

I am deeply honored, grateful, and genuinely excited to be chosen as Zen’s Warrior of the Month for October. Knowing that I was nominated by several of your instructors makes this recognition especially meaningful. Thank you for seeing me, encouraging me, and celebrating my journey.

Thank you again to the entire Zen team and to all of the instructors who have supported and inspired me. Zen has become such an important part of my life, and I am incredibly proud to be part of this community.

With gratitude and love,
Patty MacCulloch
