Sept Warrior: Amy Marlow

Meet Amy

This September, we are so happy to celebrate Amy Marlow as our Zen Warrior! Amy’s connection to our yoga community goes back even before Zen Yoga & Wellness began. She was Paula’s very first yoga customer at the opening of Young at Heart, and she has continued to be part of this community through the years.

For the past 11 years, Amy has also been living with brain cancer. Throughout those years, yoga and meditation have remained an important part of her life, giving her space to quiet her mind, connect with her body, and find a sense of peace. We feel so fortunate that Zen has become one of those places for Amy.

When we asked what she loves most about being at Zen, she described the studio in a way that made us smile: “It’s legitimately my peaceful place. My mind completely changes and calms down. It’s truly my ‘Zen Den.’”

Amy especially loves her classes with Yee Leng, whose ability to offer modifications allows Amy to practice in ways that work for her body. She credits her chair classes and the monthly Sound Meditation with Sound Alchemy with helping her feel stronger, more limber and, perhaps most importantly, peaceful.

And Amy definitely has a favorite yoga pose: King Pigeon! She loves the deep stretch through her legs and hips and how open her body feels afterward.

When asked what she would tell someone considering coming to Zen, Amy didn’t hesitate: “You should go to Zen because you will work the whole body & mind. The instructors are friendly and they have amazing classes and workshops. I personally love Sound Meditation from Sound Alchemy! It calms and clears my mind. You leave refreshed & revived!”

Those who have shared the studio with Amy over the years know there is so much more to her story than we could ever capture here. So we asked a few of the people who have gotten to know her through Zen to share what Amy means to them.

From Yee Leng, one of Amy’s longtime yoga teachers:

“It’s been a very long marathon for her, but she keeps putting one foot in front of the other, no matter how slowly it takes. She hasn’t given up and keeps moving forward.”

And from Mike & Nina of Sound Alchemy, who share Sound Meditation with Amy each month:

“Amy’s presence brings light and grace to our gatherings. Her good humor and strength are an inspiration to all around. We are so fortunate to have her and her mom as part of our sound family. We love Amy!”

And we do too. Amy, thank you for continuing to make Zen your “Zen Den,” for sharing your humor and presence with us, and for being such a special part of this community. We are so happy to celebrate you, Amy, as our September Warrior of the Month!
